Lots of Love from El Paso

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Hi!

Here at Kids Wish Network, we strive to make every wish truly special and go above and beyond the expectations of our wish families. I recently received a beautiful letter from the grandmother of Donny, one of my wish kids, and it completely confirmed that our hard work to make each wish unique and memorable is definitely worth going the extra mile. It is so nice to know that we are making a difference for these kids.

Donny’s only wish was for a big screen TV, and with the help of some awesome sponsors, we pulled through for him. His wish came in the form of a beautiful 46 inch flat screen, but we didn’t stop there. To make his wish even more special, we also got him a year of free digital cable.

I’ve posted below the inspiring words from his grandmother. What she doesn’t know is that I just sent another box yesterday with a personalized autographed 8 X 10 picture of Donny’s favorite musician: Gene Simmons of KISS. Mr. Simmons also sent an autographed clock! Hope Donny enjoys it!

Dear Madeline,

My name is Irene. I am the proud grandmother of Donny, who today received a 46” television at his home here in El Paso from Kids Wish Network.

Now I know that “Dreams really do come true.” I also realize that your organization keeps its promises to the children. I’m also surprised at the way things materialized. Even though Donny has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, you came through for him. And, of course, we owe that to you. You are an angel in disguise. When my daughter told me about you and your concern, I seriously had doubts and I never imagined that you would follow through. I apologize! The trip to Florida sounded great, but we knew that Donny wouldn’t be able to handle the rides because he doesn’t have the strength to hold on. He can’t even lift his arms much less hold on to something.

The television is the ultimate gift a child with Duchenne can receive. He is really good at games. His concentration is unbelievable. He is very smart. He has trophies and certificates for all his hard work and accomplishments. I help my daughter and my Donny as much as possible. I don’t know if Lirna told you, I’m disabled myself, and neither one of us has a vehicle. My partner takes us when he is able. He is going through radiation therapy himself…

If there is a competition for “Mother of the Year,” I would nominate my daughter in a second. She lives, breathes, and would die for her son. She is a tiny 5’1” woman who weighs the same as Donny. And that will not stop her from anything that she has to do for Donny. She physically picks him up to transfer him from his chair to another chair or table. The perfect example would be to his doctor visits when they have to examine him.

My daughter has been to hell and back. I won’t go into specifics. She has a paralyzed finger in her left hand and has rods, pins and screws in her right arm. I could write a book on her life. I know in my heart that God chose an angel for Donny. “It’s his mother.” I can’t begin to tell you what she has gone through in her life.

I pray that you stay in touch with us, so you can see for yourself what a great family we are. If you ever come to El Paso, we would love to have you for dinner, we are great cooks. Mexican food is our specialty. Even if you would stop in El Paso for a quick and sincere hug from us.

Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. We will never forget you. We know that you care. And “I have three angels in my world.” God Bless you now and forever.

Irene (Donny’s Grandmother)

Anthony did “See” you!

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

As Anthony flew into the beautiful city of New Orleans he was ecstatic with anticipation, as he was about to meet his all time favortite WWE superstar, John Cena!  John Cena autographed many items for Anthony, talked with him for a bit and took numerous photos with the teen.  John Cena is one amazing guy for everything he does for these kids.  After Anthony’s meeting, he stayed and watched Mr. Cena do his “thing in the ring.”

Meeting John Cena wasn’t the only thing Anthony and his family did in New Orleans: they also experienced a 2-hour lunch cruise along the Misissippi, checked out the Musee Conti and visited the great Mardi Gras World.

I’m glad you had a fabulous time, Anthony!

Caitlyn Couldn’t Resist the Ocean

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Caitlyn couldn’t wait for her fantasy to become reality.  While Caitlyn and her family chose to drive to Disney World for her wish, they first they stopped at Cocoa Beach where Caitlyn experienced the ocean for the first time. They relaxed for a bit and Caitlyn was so excited to dip her feet in the water.

Continuing on their journey, she and her family visited many of the Disney World theme parks.  She also met and received many autographs from different Disney Characters.  Furthermore, Caitlyn received her ultimate makeover at her favorite place, the Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique in Disney World.    They made her into the princess that she is!

Thank You To Our Sponsors

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Thank You to our sponsorsIn the past month I have had three wishes that we consider “rush” wishes.  These wishes have to be done very quickly due to the condition of the children’s health.  These wishes are very intense because instead of the 45-60 day lead time we have just a few weeks or sometimes just a few days to plan the whole wish from beginning to end.

In the beginning of December I accompanied a young man, named Brandon from West Columbia, SC with Duchenne Muscular Dystropy to attend a WWE Wrestling event and meet his favorite wrestlers in Charleston, SC.  The WWE arranged this meeting for Brandon.  Allen from Carolina Wheelchair Getaways arranged for Brandon to have a wheelchair van delivered to his house.  Mt. Pleasant Shuttle donated transportation for the wish coordinator to and from the airport.  The Renaissance Charleston donated two lovely rooms for our stay.  There were many more local businesses who contributed to make this wish memorable for Brandon.

Mid December I put a wish together for a little girl, named Elise from Cypress, TX.

Her condition is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and her only wish was to go to Disney World and meet the princesses.  Thanks to the Regal Sun Resort for coming to our rescue on such short notice. Not only did they provide a room for the family but they arranged for presents for Elise and her siblings!  They also arranged for her to have a character breakfast while on her stay.

Late December I received another rush wish for a young man, named Tom from Mills River, NC.  Tom has osteosarcoma and his number one wish was to go on a deep sea fishing trip in the Florida Keys.  With less than a week notice, Captain Jimmie Gagliardini of High Caliber Sport Fishing Charters and Captain Dan Duimstra of Shark River Charters both agreed to take Tom and his family on two offshore fishing trips!

The Ocean Reef Club of Key Largo arranged for his hotel stay and many local restaurants provided dinners for the family.  Alamo of Miami donated a car for the family and the day after Christmas, Tom’s wish was coming true!

I just want to say thanks to all our sponsors without whom none of this would have been possible!  We can’t say enough good things about you and how you care for our kids!  Have a very Happy New Year!

Aubrey Meets WWE Star CM Punk

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Aubrey with wrestler CM Punk! When I called seven year old Aubrey from Ludington Michigan to introduce myself and ask about her wish, I never dreamed this tiny little girl would wish to meet a big bad wrestler such as CM Punk.  After speaking with Aubrey I did find out she is a huge wrestling fan and her number one wish was to meet Punk.  Aubrey has been battling neuroblastoma, a form of cancer for the past two years.  I quickly got to work and contacted WWE and was delighted to find out that Aubrey would be able to meet CM Punk in my own town, Tampa, Florida.  I began making travel plans for the family.
The other day I met Aubrey and her family and we went to The St. Pete Times Forum.  We were escorted into a “special” room and before you know it CM Punk walked thru the door.  Aubrey was so excited to meet him and I think that Mr. Punk was just as thrilled to meet her.  The two of them talked and joked around and CM kept telling her how adorable she was.  He certainly was not nearly as menacing in person as he is in the ring.  She brought him some hand drawn pictures and a note for him to take home and he brought her a hat and T-Shirt as a gift from him.  After the meeting with CM was over Aubrey and her family attended the WWE Monday Night Raw Wrestling Event.  Thanks to CM Punk for making a very special young lady very happy!!!

Dale, Jr. Grants Natalie’s Wish!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Natalie & Dale Earnhardt, Jr.What a great weekend for one of our wish kids!  12 year old Natalie has long QT Syndrome, a heart condition whereby the heart beats erratically and fast which can be life-threatening.  Natalie has a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted in her chest. Natalie’s one wish was to meet her NASCAR Hero, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. so we arranged for her to go to the races at Atlanta Motor Speedway where she had the weekend of a lifetime!  It was a little rainy and chilly on Friday, but Natalie didn’t even notice!  She was kept warm by the thought of meeting Dale, Jr.!

The day began in the corporate offices of the Speedway where Natalie met her very own team of track ambassadors who were there to ensure that her wish was everything and more than she could possibly Natalie & Richard Petty imagine and boy, did they come through!  Natalie had full access to everything at the track including the garage area where she met several other drivers who were working with their crews to ensure that their cars were ready for the big race on Sunday.  She met Ryan Newman, Jimmie Johnson, and the king himself, Richard Petty.

Later, we went to the media center for the big moment – meeting Dale, Jr.  Natalie was a little nervous at first, but Mr. Earnhardt quickly put her at ease.  He signed some memorabilia for her and she gave him a personalized turkey call just like the one that his father used that was made by Natalie’s grandfather.  By the look on his face, I think Dale was as excited as Natalie was!  They talked for a while and discussed her condition.  Then Dale put his arm around her and gave her a reassuring squeeze; what a dream!  The look on Natalie’s face was priceless.  Her mom later thanked me and tearfully told me, “I haven’t seen a sparkle in Natalie’s eyes like that in so long”.  It’s moments like these that make  everything about this job so worthwhile.

Natalie & Jimmy JohnsonThe wish wasn’t over yet!  We went to Olive Garden for a celebratory dinner and the next day Natalie and her family went to the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca Cola. The wish culminated on Sunday with tickets to the race where Natalie cheered on her man!  We think number 88 is great!  Thanks, Dale!Special thanks to everyone who made this wish possible:  Mayor & Mrs. James Nix, VFW Ladies Auxiliary #4346, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Sheraton Suites Galleria, Olive Garden, McCormick & Schmicks, The Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca Cola, Stone Mountain Park, Mike Davis and special thanks to Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Melissa Meets Leland Chapman, Son of Dog The Bounty Hunter!

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Last year I spoke to Melissa of Taylor, Michigan.  Melissa has spina bifida and her wish was to meet Leland Chapman.  At that time Leland was not available to do a meet n greet so I asked her for her 2nd wish.  She told me she wanted to go to Hawaii, so we planned it for October of 2008.  When I started planning the activities for her wish I remembered that Leland lives in Hawaii so I began making contact with Beth Chapman, his mother.  She soon replied back and we set up a meet n greet for Melissa while she was in Honolulu on he wish.  Leland was kind enough to spend two hours of his time getting to know Melissa and her family!  Thanks Leland for making a special young ladies wish better than she could ever have imagined.

The Fort Smith Alumnae Chapter and The Roundtable Group Team with Diversified Computer Resources to make a young man’s wish a reality!

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Recently I worked on a wish for a young man who wanted a laptop computer.  After calling several people in his Fort Smith community Yvonne from the Alumnae Chapter called to say they were going to buy him his laptop and The Roundtable Group would buy the printer.  I then called Diversified Computer Resources and they agreed to install the router and printer and make it all work together.

Limousines of Fort Smith picked up our Wish Kid and drove him to Furr’s Fresh Buffet where the Alumnae Group presented him with his laptop.  I just want to thank all involved for being so kind and making my Wish Kid feel so special!

Thanks to the Boy Scouts of America in Cleveland, Lanecia gets her Play Set!

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Lanecia gets her Play Set!Several months ago I began working on a wish for a little girl named Lanecia from Cleveland.  Lanecia is 4 years old and due to Sickle Cell Disease, she has been in and out of the hospital many times in her young life.  When I contacted Lanecia she told me her number one wish was to have a play set for her backyard.

I recently was able to purchase the play set but it arrived in three big boxes at Lanecia’s house.  So I began trying to find someone willing to go out to the house and assemble the play set and put it up in the yard.  After many calls I finally reached Paula from the Boy Scouts and she was more than happy to get her crew together to go out make Lanecia’s wish complete.  I just want to give my deepest thanks to Paula and her crew they truly made a difference in my Wish Kids Life.

Carley’s Special Disney Wish was a great success.

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Disney Wish was a great successThis amazing little fire-cracker managed to keep the whole thing a secret, in order to surprise her three younger brothers. She made sure that they got to see and do everything that they wanted. I really believe that Carley is the true gift; to her family and to those who are fortunate enough to know her. She is an inspiration, and I am privileged to have been able to play my small part in making her Wish come true.
